In Memoriam: David Fred Iler

David Fred Iler. Musician. Goldsmith. Alchemist. 1959-2026.

Even as a 19-year-old first-year welder, it seemed David’s destiny as a legendary metal magician was already taking shape. Nearly two subsequent decades in the steel industry led to an itch for a career change… an itch scratched by apprenticing with the legendary George Von Brandt, mastering the art form and ultimately making a mark on the Portland design scene as lead goldsmith at Zell Brothers. But perhaps David’s golden age began just over 20 years ago, when he opened his own rock-n-roll chic boutique in the Pearl: Alchemy.

It was here that he built his empire; here that he met his amazing wife Laura, here that he dreamt of and crafted the most beautiful things, here he persevered through three burst pipes, two recessions, one pandemic… and here you likely happened upon his tremendous generosity, kindness, and the enveloping warmth of his smile.

David was a true Renaissance man: a musician, fisherman, sailor, builder, mechanic, electrician, carpenter, and natural-born troubleshooter. He was an esteemed colleague, a respected mentor, and a truly talented artist. But more importantly, he infused life with pure heart and soul, embodying what it meant to be genuine and compassionate—and he did so quietly, without pomp or circumstance, and without bravado. He was an exemplary role model of what it means to be a good person.

And while it seemed this brilliant man could do just about anything, David lost his battle with lung cancer earlier this month. Although he had already begun passing the torch last fall and retired earlier this year, nothing can truly prepare you for the heartbreak of losing someone who meant so much to us. His influence extended far beyond the walls of Alchemy, and his absence is palpable. We are grateful for the sincerity, support, and remembrances that so many have already shared, and will continue to share for years to come.

Our little Alchemy family may be devastatingly smaller by one soul, but we are nevertheless a representation of David’s unwavering devotion to both his art and his humanity. We were hand-picked to stand beside him through the best and worst of times, and although he deserved many more years on this plane, we are tearfully proud to carry on his legacy.

From Alloy to the Steelheads to Alchemy, may we always see you at the bench, hear your laughter, and feel your inspiration. O captain, my captain, we will miss you so.

Sending you so much love, now and always.
Your Alchemy Family,
Jen, Jennifer, Sarah & Sander
